Kuantan police have recorded the statements of PKR leaders who were witnesses of the fracas which broke out during a ceramah at Felda Lepar Hilir 1 in Gambang, Pahang, recently.

NONE Party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar ( right ) said a team of three officers led by an inspector questioned her and party communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad at PKR’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya at 3.30pm today.

The officers took about 75 minutes questioning and recording the duo’s accounts of the incident after which they spent another 30 minutes recording the statement of Nurul’s husband, Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar, who also witnessed the incident.

Accompanying them during the questioning was their counsel N Surendran, who is also a PKR vice-president.

NONE “Because we had Surendran ( left ), that helped to redirect the questions to the incident,” said Nurul, when met after the questioning.

Asked to elaborate, she said the police initially asked whether PKR was organising a demonstration at the Felda settlement, but the lawyer asked them to focus at the disruption instead.

Nurul said she was then asked about the incident, her impressions of the attack, the surroundings, and the actions taken by the provocateurs, who played loud music outside the venue of the ceramah before it started.

The police are investigating the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which follows police reports lodged last week on the Feb 26 incident.

NONE On that night, Nurul and Nik Nazmi were to host a ceramah at the Felda settlement, but was attacked instead, making it the third PKR ceramah to be disrupted in two weeks.

At a press conference today, Nurul said she welcomed the police investigation.

“However, what is important here is the follow-up action because when law enforcers such as the police show clear commitment to ensure that appropriate action would be taken against any form of threats or attacks, whether physical or mental, towards any individual, not just political leaders,” she said.

Nurul also slammed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for not taking a clear stand on violence and called on all Malaysians to adopt a more harmonious and civilised culture.

“It would be a nice follow-up to the prime minister’s apology because as a leader, people are looking to you (Najib) to give a certain direction, and when he’s silent on this matter, it is rather disappointing,” she said, adding that she was also alluding to the incident where two journalists were attacked in Penang during the Himpunan Hijau 2.0 rally.

She was referring to the Najib’s apology on Mar 3 for BN’s past mistakes. She added Najib must also apologise over the disruption by Umno members at the anti-Lynas rally held at the Penang Esplanade on Feb 26.
