The charred remains of murder-and-burn victim Nurul Nadhirah Abdullah, five, were buried at the Kampung Pertanian Masai Muslim Cemetery in Johor Baru amid drizzle at about 1.30pm.

An atmosphere of sorrow pervaded as the coffin was lowered into the grave before a talqin (instruction of religion) was recited by Nur Hidayah Mosque imam I Abdul Rahman Ismail.

As the victim’s mother, Roselyn Alan, 25, wept openly, it prompted others, including the victim’s stepfather, Lima Medang, 25, relatives and neighbours to shed tears. About 100 people attended the burial.

The police have confirmed that the charred remains found buried in an oil palm estate in Nusa Damai, Masai, on March 8 matched the DNA of Nurul Nadirah’s mother Roselyn.

Nurul Nadirah or Dirang went missing on March 1 after going to a shop near her Seri Delima Flat, Bandar Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang alone to buy some eggs and instant noodles.

Earlier, Roselyn and her mother, Milnah Jul, 52, took a last look at the remains of Nurul Nadirah at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital’s Forensic Unit.

Accompanied by relatives, they arrived at the hospital at 9.50am and spent about 20 minutes at the mortuary.

After Roselyn left in tears and listless, three policemen escorted a man in handcuff in his 30s believed to be the victim’s father, into the morgue.

The man was seen arriving earlier, but waited in a police vehicle and spent about 10 minutes at the mortuary before being taken away.

Nurul Nadirah’s remains were claimed by her family at 11.45am after they were bathed and shrouded by the Johor Islamic Religious Council.

The remains were then taken to the Al Muhajirin Masai Mosque for funeral prayers before being taken by a van to the burial ground.
