With polling to start in less than 24 hours, the opposition risks losing the Kajang state seat to BN due to internal dissatisfaction over seat allocation.

Keadilan candidate Lee Kim Sin today claimed that DAP leaders in Kajang are still very unhappy with the seat allocation agreement between Keadilan and DAP.

"Because of this, a local DAP leader went all the way to call on his party members either to 'spoil' their votes or vote for 'someone else'," Lee told malaysiakini.

"I am very sad with such an act, as the seat allocation should not be an issue at this critical time, with polling tomorrow " he added.

Lee is involved in a straight fight with BN/MCA's Low Lee Leng for the seat which has 26,984 voters, of whom 48 percent are Chinese, 43 percent Malays and eight percent Indians.

The seat was previously won by PAS through Dr Shafie Abu Bakar, who is now contesting the Bangi state seat.

Lee, a social activist, explained that the DAP feels that it deserves the seat better as Kajang was formerly a DAP stronghold, especially in the Sungai Chua area, a highly populated Chinese area.

Prior to the recent delineation exercise, Sungai Chua was part of the Balakong constituency.

The Chinese resettlement village, first established in the 60's, has more than 1,000 homes.

Why DAP is unhappy

The authority's failure to renew the land titles of many landowners in Sungai Chua recently has angered many of them as it has resulted in unsatisfactory compensation for land acquisition.

Lee said the DAP also feels that it had fought tirelessly for the rights of Sungai Chua residents on the land acquisition issue by the authorities to pave way for the Kajang Ring Road highway construction.

However, Lee claimed that he was among the first few who formed the committee to fight for the villagers' rights before DAP moved in.

Although saddened by the DAP's move, Lee hoped that the situation would be rectified, saying that "the opposition spirit must be preserved for the benefit of all."

"Although this will be a close race, I am convinced that the opposition will retain this seat as the Malays will be supporting Keadilan," he said.

"The Malays in Kajang have been very positive about Keadilan," said Lee, adding that he is well known among the local Malay community as he used to work closely with Dr Shafie.

Local DAP leaders were not available for comment.
