Ibrahim Ali calls for 'Apostasy Act'

your say Kairos: With Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali calling for the government to pass an anti-apostasy act, it is time for Malaysians to boot them out. It impinges on the freedom of religion as enshrined in the constitution.

Today it is this; tomorrow it will be other issues touching on religion. What guarantee do we have that with more power, over time, even freedom of religion will eventually be removed? It is definitely time for a change.

I'm dead against any Act to force or prohibit conversion to another religion but as a matter of observation, his statement merely shows the hypocrisy in him. But then I guess we all knew that.

The one thing I don't understand is how can someone continue to spew such nonsense knowing full well how his comments are regarded. Has the man no shame, if not for himself, then at least for his family?

Keturunan Malaysia: What Ibrahim Ali wants is an Act that allows for them to continue convert those of other religions, but at the same time, no one is allowed to convert out of Islam.

That's akin to "I can kick you as hard as I want to and as many times as I want to, but you are not allowed to even slightly twitch, wince and/or grimace in pain... not one bit!"

At the Blue Mosque in Turkey, one of a few countries I toured recently, any Tom, Dick and Harry can walk through it from one end to the other, without shoes or with shoes covered in plastic wrapping.

The country is more than twice the size of Malaysia. Muslims constitutes 99.8 percent (mostly Sunni), and the other 0.2 percent are mostly Christians and Jews.

They love to call themselves Muslims and hate to be equated with Islamists, why? Because they are honest-to-goodness moderates.

They have total freedom as far as religion is concerned. And like in Egypt, they love to say that it is between God and each and every individual.

They wear Western clothing, they drink and eat anything, except pork. As for praying and fasting, let me leave that for other occasions. Enough to say, there is absolutely very, very little reason for them to want to convert out of Islam.

Perak Boleh: Instead of calling for an Apostasy Act to replace something that is in force by the Islamic council presently, Ibrahim 'katak' must see the real reason why Muslims are turning away from their religion.

Islam is a peace-loving religion where there are many good Muslims, but people like Ibrahim turn it into a religion condemning people of other faith and races.

Ben Hor: "Less fortunate Muslims are not being helped, thus the Christians are using charity as a means to get close to (poor) Muslims."

And whose fault is it that these less fortunate Muslims are poor? NEP is in place to help these people. Maybe you're barking up the wrong tree?

And don't get it all twisted into Christians versus Muslims issue, I think the church will give alms and help everyone who is in need, whether Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or even an atheist. Try again, Ibrahim Ali, try again.

Matt: What happened to the no compulsion in religion doctrine in Islam?

Once, I challenged a so-called 'ulama' and he said that for a natural-born Muslim they can leave the faith, but not for the converts and that is because since they have entered the faith on their own accord, they cannot change their mind.

This flawed logic is laughable, if not tragic.

David Dass: Keep Muslims in the faith by preventing them by law from leaving the faith. Prohibit non-Muslims from engaging with Muslims in charitable projects. And presumably to impose penalties on anyone who attempts to convert Muslims to any other faith.

What will such law do to us as a nation? How will such laws be enforced? What kind of penalties will be imposed? The real question is how does the law dictate the beliefs of people?

The law will declare all Malays irreversibly as Muslims - ignoring the fact that there are Malays who are Christians and have been so for a long time.

In Indonesia, there are Malay Christians, Malay Hindus and Malay Buddhists. And the Filipinos - ethnically Malays - are predominately Christians.

We already have state legislation prohibiting the propagation of non-Muslim religions to Muslims. That law has never been enforced mainly because conversion of Malays by Christians has never been an issue in this country. The government should resist this call.

1M: If a person, whether Muslim or from any other faith, really wants to become a Christian, you can apply all kinds of human laws to imprison his physical body, but you still can't imprison his heart. Believe me.
