After enduring two weeks of bickering among parliamentarians on both sides of the aisle, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia today threatened to put one of them in his hot seat, so that they'll understand what it is really like.

"I am going to study the rules and see if I can appoint one of the MPs to take my place during an altercation.

pandikar amin mulia ukec student summit "This is so that you can feel how it is like to handle the Dewan Rakyat as speaker," Pandikar lamented during Question Time this morning, after stepping in to defuse another row between backbenchers and the opposition bench.

After allowing one more question to be answered, Pandikar addressed the House, armed with the Standing Orders.

"Standing Order 7(3), states that a speaker can at any time ask an MP to sit in his stead. The MP is to have all the powers of the speaker until such a time that the speaker return to his seat.

"I have the power to do this... The rule is put there by the wisdom of those who wrote the Standing Orders. This is because preserving the integrity of Parliament is not my duty alone. We must all uphold it," Pandikar told the MPs.

His lament came after having to listen to, and referee, almost two weeks of bickering and unruly behaviour from the MPs, which is said to have became like pebbles in the shoes of Pandikar and his two deputies.

'Take it like boxing'

Pandikar also advised MPs to be more sportsmanslike in their conduct, using boxing as an analogy in telling them to be prepared to take as much hits as they dish out.

"Take it like boxing. You jab, they jab back. You hit below the belt, they will also hit below the belt.

"And if you fall from a jab, get back up before you get knocked out," he said in jest.

His pronouncement was greeted with consternation from several BN MPs who said that to them, the speaker did a good job and should continue to do so.

"Well if you all think like that then I will be a very happy man," Pandikar answered.
