Former Internal Security Act detainee Yazid Sufaat has been under constant police surveillance since his released from Kamunting over three years ago, says inspector-general of police Ismail Omar.

NONE "We always monitor, new arrest or old arrests we shall monitor, we have the mechanism, the structure and the expertise of ensuring that the situation is under control," Ismail told a press conference in Bukit Aman federal police headquarters today.

Ismail is also confident that police will be able to handle any danger that the former detainee may still pose.

"I can guarantee that we will not face any difficulties in overcoming this problem, with our internal expertise and our cooperation with international police, we don't act alone.

“That is why we can detect, monitor and have the intelligence to follow up on what is happening," assured the nation's top police officer.

He was asked to respond to Malaysiakini ’s recent interview with Yazid, which showed that the former ISA detainee still harboured militant beliefs and is in contact with former associates of several terrorist networks.

Seemingly unrepentant, Yazid had expressed an open admiration of those who conducted the 911 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, calling them "marketers of Islam".

He also boasted of having been one of the few to have met Osama bin Laden.

Asked on what measures, if any, are being formulated by the police to ensure the safety of the nation now that the ISA is going to be repealed, Ismail said he is confident the new legislation will do the job.

The ISA thought by many to be outdated and draconian, is scheduled to be scrapped at the ongoing parliamentary sitting.

“We shall wait for the new law as announced by the prime minister, I myself was involved in discussions with the attorney-general to ensure we have the mechanism and legislation that are best to replace (the ISA),” he said.
