Police: Facebook, Twitter a threat to national security

your say Dr Chin Tu Lan: Facebook and Twitter are just social networking tools. The people using them are the ones who make the difference. In this case, Malaysians are using these tools, so are you saying Malaysians are a threat to the government?

A democratic government is elected by the people. If a government is seeing its citizens as a threat to them, it is about time we change the government.

Joseph Lee: Police internal security and public order director Salleh Mat Rasid is equating Umno's existence with national security.

His attitude is shocking and reveals how ignorant the police force is to the difference between the country, the Agong and the government of the day. The only thing that is being threatened is Umno's existence.

Chks: Social media is not a threat to national security; the BN government is.

Why? With BN comes cronyism and corruption. With corruption, the poor become poorer. With poverty, comes a higher crime rate.

Furthermore, with the BN government, police officers are said to be in cahoots with underworld kingpins - white becomes black, black becomes white, and the boundary is blurred.

How can we trust PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) anymore? PDRM, until and unless you clear up your own backyard, you do not earn the right to tell us what national threat is.

On the contrary, social media helps people to get connected fast and it keeps us informed of the latest developments in other places, say Penang, while we are somewhere in Sarawak.

We want to liberalise not for the sake of liberalism. On the contrary, it is the other way around - Malaysians are being influenced by a more critical and transparent way of thinking, and we no longer subject to BN and the police's hegemonic rule.

Fair and Open : A fool looks at the negative side of things. Salleh is one such ignorant fool.

We, social media users, are not threatening national security, we are trying to secure peace for the future generation.

How can you even suggest that Facebook and Twitter constitute a new threat to national security when Prime Minister Najib Razak is going to have a big ‘makan' (dinner) with some of his 500,000 Facebook and Twitter supporters?

Are you saying that Najib is also a threat to national security? Otherwise, please come out of your box and think twice before making such a statement.

By the way, as we have seen so many incidents of brutality and bullying by your cops, to the rakyat, the national threat actually comes from PDRM.

We are living in a borderless world. Our people travel everywhere and see how different societies are organised. They see countries with full democracy and notice how egalitarian they are, how everything works efficiently and how empowered the people are.

There is the inevitable comparison with countries that do not have democracy or where corruption is rampant.

Being liberal means being tolerant. It means recognising and respecting the rights of others. We cannot equate freedom and respect for human rights with bad things.

Sodom Me Sodom You: Is this top officer of the police force saying that the robbing of the rakyat's money and the blatant abuse of their power is within the law, but when people take to the streets to ask for fairness and an end to corrupt practises it is illegal and is a threat to security?

The biggest threat Malaysia faces is the loss of billions into the pockets of the ruling party and their minions. This country is being run to the ground and we the rakyat cannot ask about it?

Quigonbond: Speaking in generics and painting broad strokes makes the police director sound like a mouthpiece of Umno-BN, which treats Malaysians as unthinking ignoramuses.

He will be surprised that Malaysians are highly moderate in their views, notwithstanding the falling standards of public education to inculcate critical thinking.

Facebook does far more good than bad, and it's been proven time and again that as in public assemblies and rallies, it is the organisers' discipline that ensures order.

Conversely, if some on the Internet start inciting others to make bombs, the police are not only free to investigate and catch the conspirators before something serious happens, but Malaysians will be supportive of such investigations as well.

Swipenter: Is Salleh Mat Rasid suggesting that Malaysians should be living like the proverbial frog in the well?

Get a life and get real about what is happening in the world. If you cannot manage change, step aside and let someone else take your place. Nothing is permanent except change.
