More than 60 houses in five villages and a housing estate in Kubang Pasu suffered damages during a thunderstorm yesterday.

Among the villages affected were Kampung Kemunting Lama, Kemunting Baru, Teluk Berangin, Salit, Pekan Tunjang and Taman Seri Kemuning 1.

According to one of the affected residents in Kemunting Lama, Rosmawati Abdullah, 38, she was with a her two children, her mother and father when it started raining heavily.

She added that during the thunderstorm, a mango tree beside her house was uprooted and fell on her house but fortunately she and her family members escaped without any injuries.

Kubang Pasu Member of Parliament Mohd Johari Baharum, who visited the area, said he would seek assistance to repair the damaged houses since the rainy season had started.

“We have contacted suppliers and contractors to help repair the damaged houses although we are not sure of the estimated cost of damages,” he said, adding that he had also informed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak about the incident last night.

“I will seek assistance from the National Security Council.”

The incident was the second last week as two days ago, about 30 houses were damaged by a similar thunderstorm.

117 houses damaged in Perlis

Meanwhile, in KANGAR, it was reported that a total of 117 houses in five areas in the state were damaged in a storm that struck for 10 minutes beginning at 4.15pm yesterday.

Deputy director of the Social Welfare Department, Perlis, Ku Chik Ku Mat Esa said the areas that were hit by the storm were Indera Kayangan, Sena, Kayang, Tambun Tulang and Guar Sanji.

About 40 personnel from the State Social Welfare Department were evaluating the losses and aid would be given out as soon as the survey was completed, he told Bernama in Kangar today.

He said the worst-hit area was Indera Kayangan where 28 houses each in Kampung Bakau and Taman Hijrah were badly damaged.
