PKR called on the inspector-general of police (IGP) to order an immediate investigation into the death of a suspect yesterday in a luxury car burning case over inconsistencies in the reported cause of death.

The suspect, 42-year-old S Ramachandran, was reported to have died from injuries sustained from falling off his motorcycle during police pursuit.

NONE “However, the police version of the cause of death has raised many doubts, suspicions and questions,” said PKR vice-president N Surendran ( left ) in a statement today.

“The suspect's injuries do not appear to be consistent with injuries from a fall from a motorcycle.

“He is reported to have suffered wounds to the face and forehead, injury to the eyelid which needed 10 stitches and a brain haemorrhage.

“How were these injuries sustained? The full findings of the post-mortem examination must be made public,” said Surendran.

He questioned the police for being unable to arrest a man, who was reportedly unarmed when he was taken into custody, without “causing fatal injuries”.

Conclusion before investigation?

Surendran, who is also a human rights lawyer, also slammed the police for classifying the case as “sudden death” even before a full investigation has been conducted on the circumstances of the suspect’s death.

“The investigation must be entrusted to a team appointed by Bukit Aman Police Headquarters and which is independent of the police district in which the incident occurred,” he demanded.

Ramachandran, a suspect in cases of arson involving 23 luxury cars in Sentul over the past two weeks, died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital yesterday.
