Muhyiddin's 'dodgy source' on education quality

Thisia: What puzzles me the most is, if the education system in Malaysia is so much better than the US and UK, then why is that the government giving scholarships to students to go to there?

Isn't that plain stupid? I think the education minister needs to think before he opens his mouth.

Borg Kinaulu: I did recruitment. Although I have met many first-tier graduates from higher ranked local universities like UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia) and UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) who are impressive, local university graduates are generally of low quality.

Worse are the lecturers and ‘professors' from these places. The sad state we are in correctly reflects the values and culture of deceit versus merit in Malaysia under BN.

Leongan: I've been a senior lecturer of local college/university for the past 10 years after working in the industry for almost 20 years. What I can say about the development of our local education is that it has been dropping from bad to worse. The reasons are:

1) Poor language ability.

2) MQA's (Malaysian Qualifications Agency's) wrong emphasis on large credit points per programme decided by some 'authority' without actual practical industrial experience.

3) Students good in memorising but poor in understanding.

4) Most of the lecturers do not have substantial industrial working experience thus causing the situation of 'blind leading the blind'.

To claim that our education system is better than the West is like saying our 'bullock cart' is moving faster than the cars!

Going Bananas: Did I read correctly? A total of 87 local businessmen surveyed? Firstly, what do they know about our local education system? Did they school in Malaysia? Did they do their tertiary education in Malaysia?

Meanwhile, we continue to churn out robots who find themselves unmarketable despite post-graduate schemes to hone their skills to fit into international companies.

These half-baked graduates can only be absorbed by government agencies and GLCs (government-linked companies) because they tolerate incompetency and the lack of proficiency in English, the indisputable language of international commerce and higher education.

Why are the government and BN ministers still sending bumiputera students to the countries the education minister has termed as 'inferior' to our education system?

How many of them survive even an 'inferior' system which jealously guards competitiveness, only to return empty-handed to seek the comfort in a watered-down 'superior' system that is in reality a mediocre one where meritocracy and competitiveness do not exist?

We are not even in the top 10 varsities in Asia, for God's sake! Dream on, Mr DPM.

'Rise in sugar, fuel prices will not burden rakyat'

2cts Worth: Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Deputy Minister Tan Lian Hoe, why can't you guys in the government see beyond the tips of your noses?

Can't you see prices will spiral? Hawker food is easily RM4.50 now. I can tell you without looking into my crystal ball, it's going be RM5 soon.

Transport costs will be added to the food items. It will certainly burden the rakyat. This begs the question - why can't we have people with a bit of intelligence to govern?

Anonymous: It is true that if sugar increases by 20 sen a kilogramme and the average consumption of a family is 5kg a month, then the actual cost increase to the family is only RM1.

However, this is not the true picture at all. The increase of sugar, oil and other essential items will cause other increases (most of the time ‘unexplained' ones caused by irresponsible traders) like the increase in costs for eating out, transportation costs, accommodation costs, etc.

Has the ministry ever done a study to see how much a 10 sen increase in sugar, oil or other necessity items causes in the cost of living for the average person?

Wira: When Umno interests control an essential good, the government will justify why prices need to be increased. The fact remains when Robert Kuok controlled sugar in this country, sugar prices never increased for more than 20 years.

Presently, it has been on the increase yearly ever since Umno interests took over, even to the point that our sugar price is now higher than world market price.

Please just shut up, Madam Tan. We know you are not responsible for this increase. You are just a deputy minister. You don't have to be so condescending in defending Umno just because you need a salary.

James Dean: Tan, don't be so naive. When fuel and sugar price increases, the price of almost everything will increase.

Sugar price has not gone up for a while but this increase is to benefit the new "sugar king" and also to fund the next GE.

We all know that Malaysia is a net exporter of crude oil and the profit derived is not channeled to benefit the rakyat but to fund projects that the government do not need to account for.
