Many of those rushing to register as voters before the deadline last Saturday were disappointed, as most post offices had run out of registration forms.

Some post offices posted a notice at the entrance to deter the public from asking for forms.

It is learnt that post offices in Shah Alam, Subang, Kepong and Selayang faced the problem.

A Malaysiakini reader claimed that a friend who visited six post offices in Kepong and Sungai Buloh  last Friday, was still unable to register as a voter.

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar told Malaysiakini that many people had waited until the last minute to register themselves, resulting in forms running out.

He said many post offices, especially in Selangor, had experienced a large number of people pouring in to register, adding that this was beyond the EC's expectations.

Wan Ahmad said another problem was the printer’s inability to supply the forms according to the given schedule.

He pointed out that members of the public can visit the EC website, download and print the registration form and hand in the completed forms at a post office or an EC office.

EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof had announced on March 28 that eligible citizens who register as voters before March 31 will be able to vote in the coming general election, if held in June or later.

Aziz also said that the electoral roll for the first quarter of 2012 would close on March 31 and that it would be gazetted next month.
