Police today reminded social website users to seek confirmation on any criminal incident before sharing the information in the website concerned.

Bukit Aman Federal CID director Mohd Bakri Zinin said any incorrect information on criminal incidents not only had an effect on the authorities but also the public.

“Members of the public should know that we (police) have Facebook and Twitter accounts where accurate information on criminal incidents could be obtained.

“It’s better that users of social websites such as the Facebook and Twitter which receive information on crime to seek prior confirmation from the police before spreading the news,” he told reporters after launching the ‘High Profile Policing’ programme at the Terminal Larkin Sentral in Johor Baru today.

Mohd Bakri said this when asked to comment on the tendency for social website users to spread information on criminal incidents in the Facebook and Twitter which could create panic among the community.
