The Social Security Organisation (Socso) is looking at expanding the existing protection system or introducing a new system to enable those who are working on their own including taxi drivers to contribute.
Human Resource Minister Dr S Subramaniam said those working on their own needed protection and the government had carried out a study on the matter with special emphasis on taxi drivers.
“Taxi drivers are those who work on their own and have no employers or specific working hours,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when responding to a question from Charles Anthony a/l R Santiago (DAP-Klang), today.
Charles wanted to know whether the ministry planned to introduce the Socso scheme or health scheme for taxi drivers, some of whom were working up to 24 hours per day.
