Penang police are extending the remand of five persons including two women to assist in the investigation of a Cambodian maid who was found dead believed to be abused by her employers at Taman Asas Murni, Bukit Mertajam last Saturday.  

State police chief Ayub Yaakob said the remand for a couple and their three workers, which ended today, had been extended by another week.

"The remand on the couple and their three workers of a hardware shop aged between 30 to 40 years has been extended to facilitate investigations," he told reporters after the launching of the 42nd Anniversary of the Police Cadet Corps celebration.

He said the case had been classified as murder.

Victim’s weight only 26kg

Last Saturday, newspapers reported police finding the body of Cambodian woman Mey Sichan, 24, on the second floor of a storeroom in Taman Asas Murni.  

Initial police investigations found several scratches on the back of the body and swellings on the hand as well as wounds on the ears and legs.

The report also said based on the pathology report, the body of the victim had shrunk to only 26kg and she was believed to have been starved by her employers.
