A total of 1,145 residents from seven villages in Kampar have been evacuated since this morning after their homes were flooded with water level reaching three metres deep due to heavy rain from yesterday afternoon until early this morning.
Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said all the victims from Kampung Batu 20, Kampung Baru, Kuala Dipang, Kampung Malaya, Kampung Pasir, Kampung Nyior and Kampung Pulau Bergading were evacuated to two relief centres, namely SMK Kampar and Dewan Pulau Bergading in Kampar
“The flood was caused by exceptionally heavy rain last night causing the Sungai Kampar to overflow its banks,” he told reporters after visiting the relief centre at SMK Kampar.
Meanwhile, Zambry said the heavy rain also caused flooding in Ijok, Selama affecting three villages namely Kampung Sungai Jernih, Kampung Masjid and Kampung Sangkut.
Thirty-nine people from eight families were moved to the flood relief centre at the Sungai Segar Community Hall.
“We appeal to the relevant ministry at the national level to assist the flood victims in the state and we had directed the State Security Council (MKN) to monitor the situation,” he said.
A check by Bernama in several areas in Kampar today found many cars stranded on the road shoulders and as of this afternoon, many areas were still inundated.
The bund along the banks of Sungai Kampar near Kampung Nyior stretching for about 20 metres had also broken down resulting in the Sungai Kampar to overflow in the areas nearby.
Several houses were also flooded up to the roof.
