An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked Ujung Kulon in the Banten province of Java, at 2.26am this morning but did not trigger a tsunami, reported Bernama .

The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) in Serang, Banten said the quake’s epicentre was located at 7.17 degrees Southern Latitude and 105.13 degrees Eastern Longitude, around 95km south-west of Pandeglang, and at a depth of 10km below sea level.

BMKG coordinator in Serang, Banten, Halim Perdanakusumah, said there were no immediate reports on damages or casualties.

Fishermen in Ujung Kulon, unperturbed by the earthquake, had declared that they would still go out fishing at 4.30am.

Meanwhile, AFP reported that a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra island today but there were no reports of damage, the geophysics agency said.

“The epicentre is in the sea and there is no tsunami warning because at less than 7.0 magnitude it is still considered moderate,” said Arif Nurahim, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The quake hit 640km south-west of Aceh province, which was shaken on Wednesday by two massive earthquakes that triggered a tsunami alert.

At a magnitude of 8.6, the first of the two quakes was the strongest to hit since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 170,000 in Aceh but no major damage was reported.

Today’s aftershock was not felt in Aceh, unlike the quakes last week which sent panicky residents pouring out of their homes.
