The opposition should bring the 300,000 Malaysian Indians, said to be without proper documentations, to the MIC so that the party can take the necessary action, MIC deputy president Dr S Subramaniam said.

“My answer is simple. If there are about 300,000 Malaysian Indians without birth certificates and identity cards, please bring them to us and we will help,” he told a press conference after opening the RM2.8 million Jugra Tamil school new building in Banting today.

Subramaniam was responding to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president N Surendran’s claim that there are about 300,000 Malaysian Indians without birth certificates and identity cards.

Yesterday, Surendran led a protest outside the Parliament gates, demanding that the government identify the 300,000 and promptly issue them with MyKads.

Subramaniam said the MyDaftar campaign launched on Feb 23 last year could only identify about 15,000 who were without proper documentation.

From that number, he said, only 9,529 people had submitted the relevant application forms through the campaign.

On another note, Subramaniam, who is Human Resources Minister, said about 500 Tamil schools nationwide received an allocation of RM425 million under the administration of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak since 2009.

“This year, we’ve shortlisted the Tamil schools for the RM100 million allocation announced in the 2012 Budget. Works might start in two months after the procurement process has been finalised,” he said.

He also announced an allocation of RM50,000 for the Jugra Tamil school.
