Twenty-four non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today expressed their objection to a gathering planned for the weekend in Kuala Lumpur because they feel it can spark chaos.

They also condemned the stubbornness of the organisers, backed by the opposition, for insisting on staging the so-called peaceful demonstration at Dataran Merdeka.

Among the NGOs are Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras (YPC), Persatuan Teksi Eksekutif Malaysia, Persatuan Penjaja Kuala Lumpur, Pertubuhan Suarakan Kehendak Rakyat Malaysia (Sedar) and Pertubuhan Gerakan Memartabat Pejuang Negara Malaysia.

YPC chairman Syed Ali Alhabshee said the 24 NGOs would submit a memorandum to the home ministry on Friday urging it to act against the organisers of the gathering.

Meanwhile, in Kampar, Perak, Malaysian Youth Council president Mohamed Maliki Mohamed Rapiee said the council would leave it to its affiliates to act against their members who participated in the gathering.

“We urge youths to guard against being influenced to participate in the gathering,” he told reporters.
