Just two days before their two-year term of office ends, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioners are still in the dark about their position.

Suhakam vice-chairperson Simon Sipaun when asked on his position at a Suhakam press conference today replied: "What I know is just today is my second last day".

He also said he was uncertain who would be the new head of the commission or whether a new chairperson would be appointed.

Two other commissioners, KC Vohrah ( right ) and Ramon Navaratnam ( left ) who were also present told reporters that they have not been informed about their status in the commission.

"Que sera sera, whatever will be will be, the future's not ours to see," the duo suddenly broke into the popular song of the1950's in reply to a reporter's question.

However, an insider said no major surprises are expected for the new line-up with Suhakam chairperson Abu Talib Othman likely to retain his post. The others are also expected to be re-appointed.

Najib at the helm

In 2002, the new Suhakam line-up was announced two days before they took office.

The delay this time is possibly due to the transfer of jurisdiction - Suhakam now comes under the Prime Minister's Department from the previous Foreign Affairs Ministry. Deputy Premier Najib Tun Razak is the minister-in-charge of the human rights organisation.

Previously, Abu Talib was evasive when asked if he was likely to be reappointed as Suhakam chief. He said he will let the government make the announcement.

Other commissioners in the 12-member line-up are Dr Hamdan Mohd Adnan, Dr Chiam Heng Keng, Zainah Anwar, Asiah Abu Samah, Dr Mohammad Hirman Ritom Abdullah, Dr Raj Abdul Karim, Dr Abdul Monir Yaacob and Ranita Mohd Hussein.
