Malaysia has arrested a Colombian national believed to be part of a gang which fled with RM1 million after tricking guards at a bank at the world's tallest building, police said Saturday.

A group of some 20 Colombians made off with a bag containing the cash after they tricked three armed guards who were transporting the money from a bank at Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest building in the world, on Thursday.

The guards had stooped to pick up a wad of one-dollar notes dropped by one of the Colombians, leaving the bag unattended. Within seconds, the bag and the Colombians were gone, police said.

The suspect, aged 28, was arrested shortly after the incident, police said.

An easy trick

Kuala Lumpur city police have lambasted the security guards, describing them as "complacent and gullible."

"I was puzzled as to how the guards could have fallen victim to such an easy trick," crime investigations department chief Aziz Bulat was quoted as saying by the Malay Mail.

"There is no excuse. They were carrying a huge amount of money and they should have been more careful," he said.

Five more Colombians and a Mexican national were meanwhile arrested April 16 for allegedly breaking into and robbing several homes in the capital, the Malay-language Utusan Malaysia reported Saturday.

Police in northern Penang state also arrested a Colombian national for the same offence a few days earlier.
