A police lance-corporal was charged in the magistrate’s court in Alor Setar today with the murder of his colleague last month.

Rosli Abu Hasan, 25, was accused of killing Constable Mohd Sobri Mohd Sidek, 22, at the entrance of Istana Anak Bukit in Alor Setar at 5.45pm on April 26.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The accused nodded to show his understanding of the charge read out before magistrate Mohd Azhar Hamzah. However, no plea was recorded.

Counsel P Ashokumar, who represented Rosli, requested for the court to allow bail so that the accused can undergo mental treatment.

“The accused is a policeman who is married and lives with his family so he cannot flee or threaten witnesses. He has also agreed to surrender his passport and report himself at the police station,” he said.

However, the application was objected to by deputy public prosecutor Ayu Rohaiza Khazali because the case fell under Section 302 of the Penal Code, but the request could be made at a higher court.

Ayu Rohaiza also agreed that the accused be given a mental health examination.

Mohd Azhar allowed the accused to undergo psychiatric evaluation, but denied him bail.

He set June 10 for the case to be rementioned.
