Bar Council to boycott panel, wants UN rapporteur instead

your say Gobsmacked!: As a sovereign nation, the people need to get an outsider of repute to chair the independent panel to probe the violence in Bersih 3.0 because they cannot get justice from the powers-that-be in.

Just see the spin that has been going on since April 28 about the rally being violent and chaotic when there is overwhelming evidence that the chaos and violence were caused by the police beating the crowds, throwing tear-gas grenades and spraying chemical-laced water at them.

It is good that most of the people did not retaliate, otherwise there would have been far more people ending up in hospital and even some fatalities.

But the fact that the overwhelming majority of demonstrators were mostly docile and peaceful was conveniently ignored by the ministers. Instead many of them have repeatedly accused Bersih of violence and being politically motivated.

They have continued to repeat this lie in the hope that it becomes truth.

Hello: So, now we know that this investigative panel has no teeth at all and also no powers to summon witnesses as well as no legal immunity for everyone participating in it.

The conclusion is that this is all just a ‘sandiwara' by the BN government as a sop to the rakyat and at the same time white wash the whole affair as far as police brutality, excessive force, agent provocateurs, etc, is concerned.

BN is deluding itself if it thinks it can delude the rakyat all the time. Most of the people have wisen up to them and their game.

They are paving the way for the rakyat for a responsible, accountable, clean and efficient government. Nobody has done this.

Logger123: Why not recommend a Malaysian instead of an ‘orang puteh'? Surely there must be towering Malaysians who are impartial in their dealings.

Does the Bar Council have a hidden or a political agenda in getting the United Nations involved? What about a retired judge or one of their own? Why bring in outsiders?

The Bar Council is a disappointment. Why boycott the panel? By sitting in the panel, it provides an opportunity to voice out on any variances to proper procedure in the panel and gives us all a fair insight into any shenanigans in the panel.

By boycotting, the Bar Council has taken the easy way out of doing some hard work in this panel.

Don't Play-Play: Sixteen lawyers voted against the resolution while 939 ‘loyar burok' voted for it. The resolution is irrelevant.

Quigonbond: If Don't Play-Play is an Umno cybertrooper, he could do better to explain exactly why it is irrelevant that more than 1,000 lawyers show up on a Friday (and not even a Saturday) to debate the issue.

The Bar Council report will contain direct accounts of police brutality that no spin from the mainstream media will be able to spin out of, and will certainly contain far more credibility than the report that is going to come out from the Hanif Omar panel.

Kgen: Bravo, Bar Council members (except for the 16 Umno stooges). There is no point to participate in a panel which is headed by a biased ex-IGP to investigate police brutality. It will just be a total sham.

All the members appointed to this sham panel should decline their appointment than to be part of this parody.

Why doesn't the government accept UN special rapporteur Frank La Rue's offer? Because they cannot control his independence? It's better not to set up this sham panel than to let it be a laughing stock.

Telestai!: Syabas, Bar Council. You have done us proud. If you see injustice and abuse perpetrated on others, you must speak up or else you are complicit to such human rights violations.

Not Convinced: Perhaps the nation's lawyers should take one step further - it's time for Walk for Justice 2.0.

Malaysian Bar's EGM blasts police violence

Shakinghead: It is sickening to have law enforcers hunting, beating up innocent unarmed civilians holding a peaceful demonstration.

To add salt to the wound, lawmakers are for these uniformed thugs and are paying lip-service to bringing them to justice.

The people knows why. There is no justice in the country if these matters are not resolved. Thank you to all the lawyers who are taking time off to make a better Malaysia.

Kim Quek: It is gratifying to know that the Malaysian Bar stands at the forefront to defend and uphold the rule of law without fear or favour.

The disregard and contempt for the people's constitutional rights shown by the BN political leadership and the utterly lawless police brutality inflicted against the hundreds of thousands of demonstration gathered for a righteous cause is an unforgivable affront against the people.

It has infuriated the masses as well as degraded Malaysia's international image. Such arrogance of power has once again demonstrated that a change of government is an absolute necessity if we want to avert a rapid deterioration of the state of democratic governance in the country.

Ferdtan: Well done, Malaysian Bar. You have the people's respect. Now it is the turn of NUJ (National Union of Journalists) to call for a EGM as some of its media personnel were beaten by the police.

Their cameras's memory chips were confiscated by the police. It is time for the union to stand up for the rights of its members - don't just let others (like the Malaysian Bar) to do their job.

Justice Seeker: About 98 percent of the legal brains in the country have expressed their dissatisfaction with the actions of the authorities during Bersih 3.0.

Who know the law better than these lawyers? When an overwhelming number of lawyers say that the police are not adhering and respecting established laws, who else are there to say that the actions of the police is correct - only the corrupt BN government.
