The Perak People's Progressive Party (PPP) wants the Bar Council dissolved as it has become more political, said party vice-chairman Naran Singh.

He said the call was made because PPP found the decision of the Malaysian Bar Council as siding with the opposition in the Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur on April 28.

"We are proposing that a law academy be set up to represent lawyers in the country, which would be free from political influence.

"With the setting up of the academy, the Malaysian Bar Council, Sabah Law Association and Sarawak Law Association could be dissolved, and we would have only one law academy to look after the welfare, as well as represent the lawyer's voice in the country," he said.

Naran was speaking to 500 PPP members who gathered in front of the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre over its reportedly one-sided stand, in Jalan Dato’ Maharajalela, Ipoh.
