A debate between Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim would shed the premier’s image as a coward, said Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) in urging for the debate.

In addition, the NGO’s president, Amidi Abdul Manan, said in a statement today that such a debate is would also serve as an opportunity for Najib to clarify several issues, such as his alleged involvement in the murder of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu, corruption allegations in the Scorpene submarine scandal, and allegations that his wife Rosmah Mansor had spent money extravagantly.

“Holding debates like these is important to give both political leaders the chance to openly present their policies, and allow the people to consider their arguments before making their choice in the 13th general election,” he said.

Amidi’s statement came in the wake of a debate between Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar and PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli last night, where the duo faced off over the issue of higher education.

When the moderator Maszlee Malik asked the audience whether the time is ripe for a Najib-Anwar debate, the crowd rose to their feet and cheered.

“Considering the positive public response to the debate, Abim wants to urge for a debate between the two political giants of our country, Najib and Anwar, to be held before the 13th general election,” said Amidi.
