Representatives and family members of 41 former Ladang Bukit Jalil workers will gather outside the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on May 30 to seek a direct meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to obtain a final solution to their housing woes.

They want a final decision to be made on their claim for four acres of land for the families, failing which they have resolved to camp outside the PMO from 11am that day until the problem is dealt with.

NONE "We are determined to be at the PMO on May 30 and will not budge until the problem is resolved," the Ladang Bukit Jalil Action Committee says in a letter to the prime minister today.

The letter, signed by representatives K Balakrishnan and V Lourdmary, highlights how the group had previously sent numerous letters and memoranda to Najib throughout 2011, but had not received any final word on their predicament.

"If you (Najib) can solve the problems of the residents of Kampung Buah Pala far away in Penang, then it is not impossible for you to solve the housing problems of the residents of Ladang Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur," the letter says.

The families continued working as rubber tappers on the land after it was acquired by the government in 1980.

The government has since then sold off the land, portion by portion, to private developers, and now only 26 acres of the original 1,800 acres remain.

The families, on the other hand, have been fighting off eviction notices from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) since 2007, with most families refusing the government's offer of low-cost flats as compensation.
