Attorney-General (AG) Abdul Gani Patail denied claims of misunderstanding between him and former solicitor-general II Yusof Zainal Abiden, stressing that they are still "friends" despite the latter's decision to join Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's defence team.

He told Malay language daily Berita Harian that he is confident that Yusof is acting on behalf of Anwar in his capacity as a professional lawyer.

NONE In a surprising turn of events, Yusof, alongside veteran lawyer Karpal Singh, appeared for Anwar who was charged under Section 4(2)(c) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, for participating in the Bersih 3.0 rally and violating a court order between 2.30pm and 3pm on April 28.

Prior to this, Yusof ( right ) had led the prosecution team in the Sodomy II trial against Anwar, who was eventually acquitted.

This was also Yusof's final case for the AG's Chambers, although he had been quick to recommend an appeal against the sodomy verdict.

"So that was that. As a professional I attended the court session (on Tuesday) and did what was required with Karpal Singh and the rest of the co-counsel," he had told Malaysiakini .

Yusof ranked third in seniority in the AG's Chambers - where he was the long-time head of prosecution - when he opted for retirement from Feb 1.

According to Berita Harian , Abdul Gani said he only found out about Yusof's involvement through media reports.

"He (Yusof) had informed me, on several occasions, that he wants to retire to dabble in other fields including lecturing and opening up his own firm," he was quoted as saying.
