Najib Razak said Malaysian youths were not "demo-crazy" (penchant for embarking on demonstrations), but law-abiding citizens who uphold and respect the law and the principle of parliamentary democracy.

 

The prime minister said the youths, who acted irrationally, by attacking, kicking and throwing stones at the police, and stomping a patrol car recently were not a model for Malaysian youths.

Najib, who was overwhelmed with the turnout at the five-day Millions of Youths Gathering 2012 which came to a close today, said the peace-loving youths, who assembled peacefully here without fear and without causing public disorder were a role model for Malaysian youths.

"Do not let a handful of youths to hijack the country's agenda and image. Do not let them seize power.

"We practise the principle of parliamentary democracy, but it does not mean street riots, hurling stones, kicking policemen. That is not democracy, that is demo crazy," he said when launching the National Youth Day in Putrajaya today.

The prime minister instead urged youths to use their power with maturity and wisdom to choose leaders.

"Do not fall prey to instigation and slanders posted on the Internet and speeches of irresponsible people who incite us.

"We should know how to choose between diamonds and gems. Who can ensure a better tomorrow than today? Who can guarantee it? Who?" he said.

Four key elements

Najib outlined four key elements of a model youth which should be nurtured to guarantee the country's future, namely being civilised, of good character, disciplined and law-abiding.

Commenting on colourful T-shirts worn by the youths presence, said: "Despite different colours of T-shirts worn, the hearts are one in your confidence with the government.

"We are not asking you to support us, but you are mature and wise to make your own evaluation."

Najib said, "The phrases 'I Love PM' and 'We Love PM' will not make my wife jealous as this expression of love reflects the respect and love of the leader. I would like to thank the youths."

At the ceremony, the prime minister presented the National Premier Youth Awards 2012.

Pertubuhan Belia Chekas, Kampung Peruas, Raub, Pahang was adjudged the winner of the National Youth Association Premier Award 2012.

In the National Premier Youth Awards 2012, teacher Mohd Zuraidi Komari won the men's category while entrepreneur Haryaty Hamdzah, the women's category.

Suwaibah Muhammad Nasir was declared the winner of the Extraordinary Achievement award while K Murali and Leong Fang Hui won the 1Youth 1Malaysia awards.
