Former chief justice Zaki Azmi has been appointed chairman of the Special Commission to Study the Transformation of the Civil Service in a comprehensive and holistic manner, said chief secretary to the government Mohd Sidek Hassan.

He said six committee members appointed to the commission were former Public Service Department director-general Ismail Adam, former education director-general Alimuddin Mohd Dom, former auditor-general Dr Hadenan A Jalil, former deputy inspector-general of police Hussin Ismail, former army training commander Maj-Gen Che Hasni Che Ahmad and Cuepacs president Omar Osman.

“The commission is given a mandate to submit recommendations to the government in six months’ time.

“They would be given due consideration based on the government’s financial capability,” said Mohd Sidek said in a statement today.

Mohd Sidek said the secretariat of the commission would be based at the Public Service Department’s Planning, Research and Corporate Division.

The commission will not only conduct a study on civil servants’ remuneration but also on ways to transform and redefine the public service for future needs as envisaged by Prime Minister Najib Razak at a special gathering with civil servants in Putrajaya on March 8.

At the gathering, Najib announced the cancellation of the Public Service New Remuneration Scheme (SBPA) and approved salary adjustments of between seven and 13 per cent based on the improved version of the Malaysian Remuneration System (SSM).
