The Sabah police have formed a special unit to combat illegal betting by syndicates for the Euro Football Championship 2012 matches which will begin tonight.

Sabah Police Commissioner Hamza Taib said the special unit was headed by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head, SAC Omar Mammah, who would be working closely with the special unit set up at Bukit Aman which was led by its CID head Mohd Bakri Zinin.

“Members of the special unit also comprise members from the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as we need their expertise to detect illegal betting transactions through the Internet,” he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu today.

He said this when asked on measures taken by the police to combat illegal gambling activities, especially betting on football matches, in conjunction with Euro 2012 to begin tonight.
