Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) president S M Mohamed Idris said Penang will expect more floods in the coming years as the state government has failed to stem the problem.

NONE According to an interview with Mingguan Malaysia today, Idris ( right ) said it appeared the state government has not taken any concrete or lasting measures to stop the floods.

"I don't know what is their planning, but in terms of physical measures, it appears that there doesn't seem to be any.

"Even if there are, they are only temporary. If permanent measures are not taken, we will see flooding every time it rains," he was quoted as saying.

This, he told the Malay daily, was due to over development and the present state government's failure to learn from the mistake of past administrations.

"When they (Pakatan) took over the state government, they did not consider the problems of the environment. Instead they too became greedy and day by day the environment has become more threatened," he was quoted as saying.

Responding to the state government's suggestion that these projects were approved by the previous state government, Mohamed replied: "I disagree. They (Pakatan) are the same.

"Recently, a project by a private company was passed by the state government at Kampung Pokok Asam, Jelutong, despite the opposition of the local populace who say it affects the quality of their life, with incidents such as mudslides, which have never happened before," he was quoted as saying.

In the report, Idris warned that if no prompt action is taken, the state can expect its environmental quality to continue degrading.
