State BN chief Teng Chang Yeow said the federal government had written to the Penang government about reviving the stalled monorail project.

Teng said that the federal government wants to revive the project but despite a letter to the state, there has been no response regarding the matter. 

He added that the state has so many ideas but has not decided what they actually want.

“Barisan is very clear. We want the monorail,” said Teng during a press conference.

“The federal government had promised the monorail but the state was undecided. One day they want the underground train, another day it is aero bus, which one do they really want?” he queried.

Teng, who is Gerakan secretary-general, said Penang BN would include the monorail project in its manifesto, and hopes to implement it if it comes to power.

He added that although the plan was under the 10th Malaysian Plan and is being prepared by the federal government, every state needs to “bid” for the project.

Penang gov’t denies receiving letter

The former state exco member under BN said that the state needs to send officers to explain to the federal department why they want to take on the project.

“If BN can take over Penang, we will surely implement those projects but will do a little adjustment as traffic conditions and housing had changed, but only minor changes will take place,” he said.

When asked, state executive councillor for local government and traffic management Chow Kon Yeow denied he had received a letter from the federal government regarding the issue.

“The letter may have been sent but not directly to me. I will look into it,” he told reporters in Penang today.

Meanwhile, Teng denied he wanted the manufacturing sector replaced when he proposed that the service sector would be the focus for BN should it regain power in Penang.

“There are people who were trying to twist the matter and confuse others,” he said.

“We are very clear, we would stlll enhance manufacturing but will create another engine of growth as we cannot  depend on just one in the long run,” he added.
