Selangor mufti Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid said it is haram (forbidden) for would-be first-time haj-goers to delay their pilgrimage if the cancellation is due to worldly affairs.

NONE Tamyes ( right ) was quoted in Sinar Harian as saying that it is almost compulsory for them to perform it, if they have fulfilled all the conditions.

“For those who are performing it for the first time and they have prepared ample supplies for their family, then it is obligatory for them to go,” he said in commenting on PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s statement for members to delay performing the haj should elections be called.

There is speculation that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak may call the much anticipated 13th general election during the haj period, as earlier rumours of parliament being dissolved in June or July fizzle out.

Meanwhile, PAS spiritual leader and influential Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat was also quoted in the daily as saying that a person can delay in performing the pilgrimage as the Prophet Muhammad only performed it in the 10th year of the Islamic calendar, although the commandment came in the sixth year.

“This shows that it is not compulsory for one to perform it quickly. I am puzzled with the haj system as when your name is listed, you rush and go,” he said.

Nik Abdul Aziz also sought assurances from Najib that he would not call an election during the haj period.

Kelantan Umno deputy chief Awang Adek Hussin described calls for PAS members to delay going on pilgrimage should elections be called as irresponsible.

Najib has until April 28 next year to dissolve parliament and call for a general election.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom, in commenting on the issue two days ago, said Muslims can apply to delay their pilgrimage.
