The federal government has set aside a huge allocation under the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP) and the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) to tackle flood woes in Selangor, Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Joseph Kurup said.

He said in the 9MP, the federal government had spent RM527.8 million on flood mitigation projects in Selangor, and not RM60 million as alleged by the opposition.

"Under the first rolling plan of 2011-2012 and the second rolling plan of 2012-2013 under the 10MP, the federal government has actually approved an allocation of RM108.5 million for Selangor, including an allocation of RM24.78 million in 2011," he said when winding up the adjournment speech at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.

Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) had wanted to know whether the allocation for flood mitigation projects in Selangor was reduced on purpose by the federal government following several flash floods incidents in the state.

Kurup said the Selangor government, which is being led by the opposition, should play its role and take the responsibility to tackle flood woes in the state.

Putrajaya concerned

    

Kurup explained that of the allocation of RM527.8 million, RM359.8 million was spent on the first phase of Sungai Damansara flood mitigation project.

"The project was completed in 2010 and has given a major impact in preventing flash floods in Shah Alam, especially in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) Jaya and the areas around the Shah Alam Stadium," he said.

The deputy minister said of the allocation of RM108.5 million, RM64.58 million was spent on the second phase of the Sungai Damansara flood mitigation project.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department was also planning to implement Sungai Langat and Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) flood mitigation projects, depending on the allocation.

"The project in Sungai Langat will help overcome flood woes in Kajang areas, while MSC's project will benefit the residents around Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Puchong and Dengkil," he said.

Kurup said the huge allocation given for the implementation of flood mitigation projects in Selangor also proved the federal government's concern and commitment in helping the people in the state.
