Dubbed Bollywood’s “first superstar”, Khanna, 69, has been unwell and was reported not to have eaten for three to four days.
Khanna was admitted to the city’s Lilavati Hospital, IANS reported, citing hospital sources.
Although the cause of his health problems was unclear, some local news channels reported that he had a stomach infection.
On Thursday, the actor had waved to fans from the balcony of his residence while his son-in-law Akshay Kumar, also an actor, denied reports that Khanna’s health was deteriorating.
Khanna starred in over a dozen blockbuster hits between 1969 and 1972 including Anand, Aradhana and Amar Prem . He has won several Indian film industry awards and is popularly called Kaka by his fans.
