Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) will announce the status of water supply in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on a weekly basis following complaints by the public on water supply interruptions since May 17.

Its corporate affairs executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som said the interruptions were due to the increasing demand lately which exceeded the plant's capacity and not because of the drop in water level at the main storage pool due to the hot weather.    

He disclosed this when met by reporters at the River Rescue Brigade Club’s Eco Challenge programme organised by Syabas and Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd at the Nur Laman Bestari Eco-Resort, Hulu Yam, near Kuala Lumpur today.

Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd operations manager Syed Danial Syed Ariffin meanwhile, advised the consumers to be prudent in water consumption and to store it as an early preparation.

He said all parties should cooperate on the matter as at the moment Syabas was still unable to accommodate the high demand.

On the Eco Challenge programme, Syed Danial said it aimed to create awareness on preserving the river and environment at the early stage, involving the participation of primary and secondary school students nationwide.  

A total of 150 students from Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kuala Kubu Baharu, SMK Kuala Kubu Baharu, SMK Darul Ehsan and SK Gombak Utara participated in the programme.

Meanwhile, Green Technology and Water Ministry deputy secretary-general Nor Aini Abdul Wahab said it was the responsibility of everyone to preserve rivers as the main source of water for the country.     

Therefore, she said it was hoped that such a programme could initiate awareness among the students on the importance of the environment.
