Malaysia is firmly against same-sex union because it is against all religions, even though United States President Barrack Obama is for it.

In a written reply to a question from Pasir Puteh MP Muhammad Hussain, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he had stated the country's strong opposition to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues to United States deputy secretary of state James Steinberg, during his recent visit to Washington

"Our stand on the LGBT issue is clear, when we did not allow their gathering recently because it was against the norms and religions of society.

As religious groups are in the majority both in Malaysia and in America, he stressed the need to abide by and respect religious laws where sensitive social issues are concerned.

"We will continue to state our stand on this issue whenever there is a meeting with the US. Since Malaysia does not adopt a policy of interference in the domestic affairs of another country, the country will not object openly to Obama's stand."

Muhammad had asked whether Malaysia will protest Obama's stand of supporting same-sex marriage.

Najib said Malaysia is on the same platform with other member countries in the Organisation of Islamic Conference on the matter.

"What Obama had said recently is his own personal opinion and only applies to the United States," the PM said.

Obama had last month controversially announced his administration's support for same-sex union now being practised in some states there.

Earlier this month, Najib had also stressed that LGBT issues have no place in Malaysia as it is a deviant culture.

Last November, the authorities had pulled the plug on the Seksualiti Merdeka programme as it is said to promote LGBT culture.

Malaysia had also recently banned the works of controversial Canadian author Irshad Manji for her advocacy of LGBT rights.
