Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today launched the 1Malaysia Student Discount Card, which he hopes will ease the burdens of students in the face of rising cost of goods.

muhyiddin visit penang 160612 "The flash card when flashed will give students five to 60 percent discounts in more than 50 participating businesses," Muhyiddin explained when launching the card in Putrajaya today.

This, he said, was part of the government's measures to cushion the impact of rising costs of goods on the rakyat.

The idea, Muhyiddin added, was mooted at a sitting of the National Students Consultative Council that he chaired last year.

More than 1.5 million students from all educational institutions of higher learning are to benefit from the discount scheme which, among others, will cover the purchase of food, groceries, essential goods, healthcare, personal care as well as books and stationery.

Students in these institutions are the latest to be targeted for goodies by the BN-led government in the run-up to the 13th general election, with taxi drivers and cartoonists being promised goodies just last week.
