PAS’ policies would lead to a divided Malaysia, warned Sungai Pelek assemblyperson (BN-MCA) Yap Ee Wah, by implementing different laws for peoples of different faiths.

“PAS has been using religion to divide society in Malaysia, separating the lifestyle of Muslims and non-Muslims and implementing two different sets of laws to restrict people’s freedom and movement,” he said in a statement today.

He was responding to a directive by the Kuala Selangor District Council that unmarried Muslim couples must sit separately in cinemas , in hopes of curbing public indecency.

The regulation has since been frozen by the Selangor state government, saying that it was not consulted on the matter.

“PAS has obviously not given up its original intention to form a theocratic state,” Yap said, adding that this is merely the Islamist party’s latest attempt to implement hardline policies.

In addition, he condemned DAP for its silence on this and other similar issues, saying that it could not defend the rights of non-Muslims.

“I strongly urge the residents of Selangor to say no to hardline policies and say no to PAS,” he said.
