The Kapar PKR branch has stepped forward to offer its national president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail the state seat of Sementa to contest in the coming general election.
Kapar PKR branch chief Azizi Ayob is quoted by
Sinar Harian
today as saying Wan Azizah's stature as PKR president and a former MP would strengthen to party in the area if she were to contest there.
"The Sementa state seat is seen as a hot seat because in the last general election, the PKR candidate 'ran off' on nomination day.
"That gave a bad impression of our party and many voters lost confidence in PKR. However, we believe that with Wan Azizah as the candidate, she will restore that confidence," Azizi is quoted as saying.
The offer comes after Wan Azizah announced that she will contest a state seat in the next general election.
She resigned as Permatang Pauh MP in July 2008 to enable her husband and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to contest the seat in a by-election.
Anwar had been the Permatang Pauh MP before he went to jail in 1999 and Wan Azizah later won the seat.
As a result of her resignation, Wan Azizah is banned from contesting any parliamentary constituency for five years until July 2013.
