DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng's political secretary Zairil Khir Johari has been lambasted for "lying" to defend his boss - who is also Penang chief minister - over the state’s policy on low- and medium-cost (LMC) housing.

State Umno Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin said Zairil had lied when he said Penang Development Corporation has built 3,806 LMC units since Pakatan Rakyat took over in 2008.

adam adli visit penang 291211 penang umno youth chief shaikh hussein mydin This figure, Shaikh Hussein ( right ) claimed, differed from the 11,596 units of LMCs reportedly built by the state's development arm, the Penang Development Corporation, according to information he said was contained in Buletin Mutiara.

Buletin Mutiara is the state's information booklet - published in four languages and distributed to Penangites twice a month.

He said these "lies" were supported by Lim's statement during his debate with MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.

But Shaik Hussein is not convinced about the figures provided by Zairil and demanded that the state declassifies all documents on plans approved for building LMC housing in Penang.

This, he said, would prove whether Zairil was "lying merely to defend his boss" as the DAP-led administration appeared to be "good at lying to confuse the rakyat".

'Perverted logic'

During DAP-MCA debate, Lim had said that the state was responsible for building 1,194 low-cost houses while 2,612 had been build by the private sector since his party assumed power in Penang in 2008.

Lim had also reported that the state had built 7,790 low-cost houses, while the private sector contributed to the building of 5,562 units.

These details are found in Zairil's letter to Malaysiakini headlined "Soi Lek's Penang housing issue 'perverted logic", published last week.

"When will the plan be approved for all the 3,806 units? Weren't most of it approved before March 2008 by the previous BN government and not by DAP as alleged?" he queried.

In his letter, Zairil said Chua had attempted to belittle Pakatan's achievements "by rattling off a string of untruths and wild accusations".

Zairil said besides the 3,806 units built since 2008, the state government has announced an additional 18,000 units to be built in every corner of the state.

This includes 1,320 units to be located on a 6.9-acre plot of land along Jalan SP Chelliah in the heart of George Town to cater for the housing needs in the city, he said.

"By arguing that the state government did not technically build any houses per se, Chua is guilty of fact-twisting.

 

"If this logic is accepted, then the federal government cannot claim any credit for houses built by agencies such as Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Bhd. What kind of perverted logic is this?" Zairil had asked.
