Bersih not 'unlawful organisation', rules court

your say Starr: Hooray for Bersih! That shows not all that is said and done by the government is right and proper. It's therefore imperative that there must be proper checks and balances in our system of governance, and this will only come about with the 'separation of powers' between the three branches of government.

Without the 'independence' of the judiciary, perceived or otherwise, public trust in the government will surely deteriorate over time, leading to a dysfunctional government as has been the case since the removal of Salleh Abas as the country’s chief justice.

The executive branch of the government does not represent the whole of the government without the other two branches, i.e. the legislative and the judiciary. They cannot be mere tools of the 'executive'.

Umno-BN have in the past decades destroyed the proper balance of the branches of government in pursuit of Mahathirism. It's to be hoped that Pakatan Rakyat will take the first step to restore that balance in the new government, together with a host of other reforms.

Care For Raykat Selangor: Congratulations Bersih. You have given the home minister a technical knockout (TKO). Now, start to focus on the coming 13th general election (GE13) and bersihkan Malaysia. Hopefully, there is no appeal.

From past history, I am sure Umno will apply to the Court of Appeal and later, to the Federal Court, and this ruling will be eventually overturned in accordance with Umno's wishes... sudah biasa lah, skrip ini . Sounds like a sandiwara by Umno.

Artchan: The reasons put forth by High Court judge Rohana Yusof sound reasonable, but will our thick-skinned ministers be able to understand the ruling? Right from the start, if the attorney-general (AG) - that is, if he is learned - would have advised against it. Now it looks so stupid.

Kolopilah: This is extremely good news. I will now proudly wear my yellow Bersih T-shirt. Oh my God (OMG), how I really, really wish BN can be booted out for good.

Anonymous_3e21: To win a case against the Umno government, you need to have a perfect 10, but for the government to win, it only needs to bulldoze the case through the courts.

While we do have good and professional judges, unfortunately we do have in abundance the unprofessional ones as well. Records will show that.

SSRAVICHANDRAN: We should hold on to our horses... this is akin to showing that the government is fair, which is something fishy. Always take the Malaysian judiciary with a pinch of salt.

Odin: This is good news. However, I am, and much as I hate to use vogue phrases, “cautiously optimistic”. The crooks may appeal the decision, and God knows what strings and cables they will pull to ensure they win.

Kee Thuan Chye: It does not matter if this is wayang kulit (shadow play). The important thing is, it's now out there - the acknowledgment that there's nothing wrong or bad about Bersih.

And it's a bonus that the home minister's declaration of illegality is publicly deemed "tainted". This piece of news will be read by people who read only the mainstream media and make them think.

1) There are still many judges within our judiciary who aren't tainted, such as Justice Rohana Yusof.

2) That Hishammuddin and Umno cannot change for the better.

3) That we actually have brave and good leaders as Bersih steering committee members - S Ambiga, A Samad Said, Haris Ibrahim, Maria Chin Abdullah and many others.

With that, maybe we can win back Malaysia for all Malaysians.

Mr KJ John: The minister is supposed to be a trained lawyer, but maybe his political brains work harder than his rationality and common sense.

I am sure his father and third PM will be ashamed had he been alive. Let us not even talk about the grandfather and founder of Umno.

Umno may have additional illegal immigrants who were made legalised voters but if all Malaysians unite, then we can put back Malaysia on the map as a civilised nation.
