Sibu Airport’s terminal building, upgraded and expanded at a cost of RM84.44 million, is ready for full operation.

Currently, the entire airport is undergoing upgrading and expansion works costing a total of RM136.88million, with the works divided into two main packages, plus another additional package.

The first package is the terminal building, completed 45 days ahead of schedule while the second, costing RM52.44 million, involves the expansion of the aircraft apron and taxiway which is ongoing.

The additional work, costing an extra RM4.4million, is the ongoing construction of a double carriageway to the airport, located about 25km from the town.

State Local Government and Community Development Minister Wong Soon Koh this morning visited the terminal building to witness its full operation and receive it on behalf of the government from its contractor, Musyati Sdn Bhd.

Later, speaking to reporters, Wong described Sibu Airport as the biggest domestic airport in the state, well-designed and equipped with user-friendly facilities, including four aerobridges.

He said it would play a vital communication role in the state’s central region, particularly in the next three to 10 years, as more hinterlands in the vicinity would be opened up for land usages, notably for oil palm cultivation.
