YOURSAY ‘Can the RCI findings be ready before GE13? Can the recommendations of the RCI be implemented before GE13? No.'
Najib taps ex-Borneo CJ as Sabah RCI head
Kannan MSakti:
Malaysia's royal commission of inquiry (RCI) is equal to a toothless tiger. It can merely investigate and submit reports, without action taken. The power to execute the wrongdoers is still within AG (attorney-general) and PM.
So will it make any difference? We have seen the failure of RCIs in the cases of VK Lingam and Teoh Beng Hock (TBH). I have lost trust. It's a waste of rakyat's funds. Let's move to change the culprits for a better Malaysia.
Justice Kini: What is more important is the terms of reference, not a half-past-six one like the Bersih 3.0 panel that ex-chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak Steve Shim rejected for health reasons.
I presume he's in much better health now and will proceed with the RCI with full speed, not like the Bersih panel.
On completion, the RCI report should be endorsed by the Agong for further action via Parliament, not via the prime minister. Our trust in the PM is all gone, given the no action in the VK Lingam case and other RCIs.
Iwatch: The terms of reference of the RCI to probe Project IC was announced after two BN MPs go against their master. As such, the general election should be on hold until the outcome of RCI is known.
Dont Just Talk: What is the point of having RCI when there is no follow-up action taken against the six men in the Lingam case? ‘Looks like me, talks like me but not me' scandal? Again, what happened to the RCI on the TBH case?
All these are just for show to show stupid Malaysians how easily they can be convinced.
Ferdtan: As long as the RCI does its job diligently, fairly and transparently, the objective of the open hearing can be considered as achieved.
Even if there are no punitive action taken against the traitorous culprits later (that is on assumption that the commission identifies the guilty ones), it is enough to shame them.
This is very important as this will act as a deterrent against such happenings of selling out the country again. The most important task of RCI is not to punish, but to be brave, without fear or favour, to truly identify the real reasons and leaders behind such an insidious act.
The question in the mind of all Malaysians: are these members of RCI up to the task? Or, is the whole thing just a shadow play for political exigency - to buy time for the desperate BN government until the GE13 is over?
Amoker: Steve Shim, you wasted your time in the Lingam case where no one was found guilty. Not one. As a learned judge, do you think you will be allowed to find out the truth?
Babylon: Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad seems to think that if it does not benefit Umno-BN, then there is no point holding the RCI.
Hey, what about the citizens of this country? They want to know the truth, whether it is beneficial to you or not. Everything he spews is for political mileage.
Anonymous #59817899: Another sandiwara to con the Sabahans. Can the RCI findings be ready before GE13? Can the recommendations of the RCI be implemented before GE13? No, no, no! So, it's too late.
Aminah Nargis: One more term of reference should read as follows: "To arrest Dr M and lock him up in prison with no access to the press until ordered to appear as the star witness on the issue." As a special case, this must be done now.
Changeagent: Let's be honest here. The only reason why Najib had called the RCI into illegal immigrant problem in Sabah is to arrest the defection of more MPs to the opposition fold.
If he was serious about the problem, he would have announced an inquiry much earlier. Indeed Sabah MPs Wilfred Bumburing and Lajim Ukin had forced Najib's hand on this.
ML Ho: The RCI will not solve Sabah illegal immigrant problem. If all the allegations are found to be true, how then to handle those illegal immigrants? Send them back to Indonesia, Philippines or the deep blue seas?
Indonesia and the Philippines won't accept them because it's hard to prove their country of origin and it can be an economic burden to them, too.
Disbeliever: The announcement of the RCI is done at this time to regain the trust of the Sabahans. The RCI is nothing more than just wool over the eyes. I bet the RCI will take place and after that, everything will be swept under the carpet.
Shim should not accept the appointment as he should have learnt from his experience with the Lingam RCI. Has the government acted on the findings of that RCI? Nay! Everything was an eye-wash just to make Malaysians feel good.
The moment BN wins and retains federal power, all will be back to square one. Haven't we learned from our experience?
Fairplayer: To be fair to ex-chief justice Shim, I believe he is a man of principles and guts, but lacks the power to bring the crooks to book. By his rejecting to be part of the Bersih 3.0 panel, I saw a man who didn't believe in wasting time on falsehood. For that, I salute him.
The fact that he and his team arrived at the verdict in the Lingam RCI revealed he is not easily manipulated to twist the illegitimate into legitimate. Nonetheless, the choice is his - to lead the Sabah RCI or not to be involved. I wish him the best.
Anonymous #19098644: Much as everyone doubts the true motives and intentions of Najib; much as we doubt that the BN government will take action to implement the recommendations of the RCI; this is an opportunity that should be capitalised on.
First it is to bring out into the open all the facts and truth of what has happened in Sabah.
Second, the presence and action of this RCI will definitely result in the immediate suspension of this nefarious act of granting citizenship to Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Filipinos and Indonesians.
Third, it will result in finger pointing among the crooks who are responsible, and who did what.
Fourth, it will be the basis for the next government to take action.
Lastly, it will provide Pakatan Rakyat the undisputed facts to get the electorate to turn out and vote for a change, a change of government so that Sabah can be returned to the Sabahans.
So let's not dismiss this and cut our own noses to spite ourselves.
Vgeorgemy: Whatever the outcome of this RCI, it will be a warning shot to future leaders to act within the rule of law when it comes to national interest. This RCI will give the rakyat their constitutional right back. No one is ever able to threaten the rule of law again with impunity.
Jean Pierre: What about an RCI on illegal immigrants in Selangor? There are tonnes of Indonesians with ICs in Klang and Kuala Selangor.
My sister was teaching at a school in Tambak Jawa in the early 90s - 90 percent of the students there didn't have Malaysian birth certificate and were born to Indonesians with red ICs. I'm sure they have MyKad now.
