Traffic violations recorded on camera in the 'Ops Selamat' operation carried out by the respective Road Transport Department (RTD) special team nationwide from Aug 12 until yesterday totalled 1,876.

RTD deputy director-general Ismail Ahmad said the department was in the process of issuing the relevant summonses to the offenders.

In Perak, RTD personnel who boarded 52 express buses disguised as civilians recorded 10 violations by bus drivers including using the handphone while driving, overtaking on double-lines, exceeding the speed limit, and driving beyond the 400 kilometers permitted for a driver.

Another 113 violations by motorists were recorded by RTD personnel at four bus terminals namely Medan Gopeng, Kamunting Raya, Teluk Intan and Manjung.

"The RTD has issued 47 summonses and notices against the drivers involved," he told reporters when met during an 'Ops Motosikal' in Kamunting, Perak, yesterday.

Motorcyclists targetted

Ismail said the Ops Selamat this year was concentrated on motorcycles based on the 61 percent or 6,877 road accidents nationwide involving motorcyclists and pillion riders last year.

Meanwhile, he said Perak recorded 452 violations throughout the four motorcycle operations mounted since the launch of Ops Selamat, with 257 summonses issued for various offences.

"As at 10pm last night, RTD in an integrated operation with the Royal Malaysian Police and National Anti-drug Agency inspected 284 motorcycles and issued 24 summonses. Five motorcycles were also seized and one motorcyclist tested positive for drugs," he added.
