Komtar assemblyperson Ng Wei Aik has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against three cops for allegedly accepting a bribe near the Penang DAP headquarters in Rangoon Road.

He said a police car with three personnel in it had stopped a Proton Iswara about 3.15pm on Aug 26, and threatened the driver with the traffic offence of failure to display the road tax disc.

NONE Ng (right in photo) , who was 100m away, said he saw a policeman showing the driver a summons book, but that the trio left without issuing a summons.

"This was verified by the (driver) who said she had paid them RM100. They told her that (beating) the (red) light would (involve a compound fine of) RM300,” he said.

“She was (also) told to think for herself how much the offence (of not displaying the road tax disc) would cost.”

He said another individual who witnessed the incident is willing to testify, if asked to do so.

"This show how rampant corruption is. ... it seems they are willing to accept a bribe as long as they are not caught.”

Decision to ‘protect driver’

Ng, who is the state DAP Youth head, also said he choose to report the incident to the MACC in order to protect the driver from potential repercussions from the police.

"I hope her infomation will not be leaked to the police. We do not want her to get into trouble with the police,” he noted.

azlan Ng expressed the hope that the MACC would launch an immediate probe by contacting the police personnel involved.

He also urged the public to lodge reports with the MACC "even if you have paid a bribe".

"Once (in the past), we accompanied a driver to do so at the Pattani Road police station. The officer involved was immediately called up for investigation," he added.
