The poor quality of water reported at several places in Port Dickson, Rembau and Rantau is due to a drop in quality of raw water supply from the Linggi river.

Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan Sdn Bhd (Sains) corporate services head Azlan Abdul Aziz said, beginning this month, the ammonia, iron and maganese content in the raw water had exceeded the specification of raw water quality standard’s common parameters.

“The reduction in the quality of raw water from the river affected the quality of treated water produced at the Sungai Linggi treatment plant. The content of ammonia and manganese were among the main reasons for the complaints of smelly water reported by consumers at the affected areas,” he said in Seremban today.

He said the company had taken measures to increase the quality of water at the treatment plant and this included increasing raw water aeration to reduce levels of iron and manganese, increasing dosage of hydrated lime, activating dosage of activated carbon to reduce the smell, as well as cleaning the ponds and filters more frequently.

Azlan requested the public to play their part in taking care of the main rivers in the state, which were the main sources of water to be treated, especially the Linggi river, to avoid a recurrence.
