The father of a private college student, Ammar A Rahman, 19, who dropped his pants to insult Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during a Merdeka Eve incident recently, appeals for his son to be given a second chance.

A Rahman Abdullah, 53, asked that his son be allowed to continue his studies at any local university for the sake of the teen's future.

"For his future, I hope my son will be given a second chance to study after this. This may be an honest mistake and I hope he will learn from it.

"On behalf of my son, I humbly and sincerely apologise to the prime minister, his wife and all Malaysians over the incident," he said in Taman Murni, here, today.

Muhammad Ammar, a Cybernatics International Technology College student, was detained by police over the incident at the "Janji Demokrasi" rally held at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur on Aug 30.

However, he was released on bail at 10pm yesterday after police recorded his statement and was taken home by his parents here.

A Rahman said his youngest child preferred to stay in his room and refused to talk to anyone since he came home from Bukit aman.

"We worry about him keeping to himself in the room and refusing to talk to anyone," he said.

Muhammad Amar's mother, Rahilla Ahmad, 53, also expressed her sadness over the incident and hoped society would stop punishing her son.

"I don't know what to say...I'm sad...good or bad, he is my son and as a family, we need to accept his mistake.

"I just hope the public will not continue to condemn our family. Give him a second chance as he is still young and had acted rashly," she added.
