Cuepacs is hoping for the best ever bonus for civil servants this year when Budget 2013 is tabled in Parliament on Sept 28, said its president Omar Osman.

He said the umbrella union for 1.4 million civil servants had asked Prime Minister Najib Razak to consider giving two months bonus this year, which if comes to a reality would be the best ever in the history of the Malaysian civil service.

"The best so far has been one month bonus which was given during the time when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister," he told reporters after attending a Cuepacs function in Kota Baharu today.

He said civil servants deserved the two months bonus as they were at the forefront of implementing the government's polices.

On another matter, Omar said Cuepacs would be suggesting to the Public Service Commission to change the "pembantu" (assistant) designation in the civil service to one that was more suitable with the times as it was outdated.

On problematic civil servants said to number somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000, Omar said they needed to be counselled first before disciplinary action was taken.
