PKR Youth has responded to Selangor Umno’s allegation that the present state government has caused Universiti Selangor (Unisel) to suffer annual losses, pointing the finger back at the previous Umno government’s malpractices.

“The Selangor government is in the process of taking over Unisel’s RM15 million losses to alleviate the financial burden to the university.

“This is because the problem started during the construction of Unisel, when the former Umno-BN state government did not allocate funds to settle the said debt,” said PKR Youth Selangor chief Azmizam Zaman Huri.

NONE He was responding to Selangor Umno deputy chief Noh Omar’s (right) demand that the PKR-led Selangor government answer to Unisel’s losses as recorded in its audit reports for 2009 and 2010.

“As a minister ... Noh Omar should know that Unisel does not have sufficient capital or the financial means to repay the said debt.

“This is because one of the problems of Unisel is its capital was not sufficient to foot costs such as its campus construction amounting to RM600 million and its hostel costing RM200 million,” said Azmizam in a statement today.

‘Will Noh reveal contracts?’

Azmizam pointed out that Unisels’ financial situation was a result of “Umno’s agreements profiting its cronies”.

“PKR Youth feels that Noh Omar should be brave enough to disclose Unisel records regarding the agreement with Jana Niaga (JNSB)  lasting 30 years, that was signed between 2003 and 2004, during the time of the BN state administration, that resulted in Unisel owing RM15 million to JNSB.

“We believe Noh Omar himself knows the state government under BN had approved the whole Unisel building without obtaining a certificate of fitness (CF) and that act could have jeapordised the safety of Unisel students and staff alike,” he added.

He called Noh Omar’s criticisms “mischievous” for trying to “victimise” Selangor MB Khalid Ibrahim knowing well the problems were created during the administration of former MB Mohamad Khir Toyo.

According to Bernama , Noh Omar yesterday demanded Khalid to explain Unisel’s debts amounting to RM54.8 million in three years since Pakatan Rakyat ruled Selangor in 2008.

The university administered by the Selangor government suffered losses of RM1.63 million in 2008, RM13.55 million in 2009 and RM39.68 million in 2010, he said, citing audit reports for the period.

    

Noh said the 2009 and 2010 financial audit reports were signed by Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in August 2011.

    

"The menteri besar scoffed at me for saying that Unisel was in critical financial situation.

    

"Now that I have copies of the audit reports, I want him to deny or admit the losses," he told reporters after the opening of Tanjong Karang Umno division delegates meeting by Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.
