Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader P Waythamoorthy is not a threat to any party and would in no way threaten the Indian community’s support for the government, MIC president G Palanivel said today.

He said unlike the situation in 2008, the Indian community’s support for the government was increasing.

“Indian support is coming back, not like (in) 2008....Our prime minister is doing a good job,” he told reporters after launching MIC’s online portal, Velicham , in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said Waythamoorthy might continue to be an influential leader among the Indians in the country but he was no threat to anybody, while MIC was now working hard to ensure Indian support for BN remained strong.

Waythamoorthy, who left Malaysia on self-imposed exile, returned to the country on Aug 1 this year after having been away since November 2007.  

On the Velicham portal, Palanivel said it had its soft launching on July 15, 2011, and it provided first-hand and latest information including on opportunities in various areas, in line with the prime minister’s vision in driving the new economy.

“Within a year, this portal achieved 448,000 net users. It is updated daily and fully supports the government’s policies and development programmes,” he said.

Palanivel said the portal would be upgraded to be available in four languages - Malay, English, Tamil and Mandarin.

Currently, the portal is only available in Tamil and there are plans to have its news in the print and electronic media.

The portal which can be accessed through www.velicham.com.my, also has plans to handle public complaints through the online system.
